Welcome!
Thank you for visiting the practice of Dr. Alex Mirman. I am a UCLA-trained psychiatrist and psychotherapist who works with adults ages 18-64. I treat patients with a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, psychosis, substance use disorders, and more. While medications can be a powerful tool, I strongly encourage my patients to be in therapy (whether with me or another therapist) and believe this to be an important part of an effective treatment plan.
Please feel free to read more about my approach and contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you and hope I can be of service.
My Approach
I believe that high-level clinical care can and should be provided with curiosity, compassion, and precision. I view my role as extending far beyond prescribing medications; I also emphasize treatments such as psychotherapy and lifestyle interventions aimed at building your agency and well-being. It is my hope to work collaboratively with you in creating a treatment plan that will fit your individual needs and aims.
While I have training in several forms of therapy, my work is primarily informed by a type of psychodynamic therapy called Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP, for short). It is based on the idea that much of our suffering comes from our resistance to facing complex, painful feelings. When we deny, ignore, or otherwise avoid these feelings, we ultimately contribute to our own anxiety, depression, and other psychological difficulties. In therapy, you and I will work together in the “here and now” to face these difficult emotions together. Though not always easy, my patients have shared their appreciation for our close collaboration and the concerted effort I make to help them reach their goals.
I am invested in empowering you to live a fuller, more meaningful life with intentionality. I take an active stance in helping you recognize the ways in which you show up in the world - and in therapy - so you can make the choice to live differently.
